parking brake is loose

if the parking brake feels loose when you pull it up how would you tighten it so that that parking brake works better especially when i'm on a steep hill. when i pull it up (pretty much all the way now) sometimes (depending on the incline) the car will rool a little backward. any ideas?

take out the center console and tighten the parking brake nut
