Unhappy

So I haven't wrote in a while. Work has held me prisoner and unfortunately I haven't done much with her. I'm new to all this stuff as far as mechanical work is concerned. I did figure out how to replace the valve cover gaskets, and did it all by myself. YAY for me! I am having issues with the RPM shooting up and down on it's own. It idle's pretty low and unless I put the car in neutral while I'm at a stop light or spending extended periods of time at a stop it rattles and shuts down. I was told that it's probably the map sensor, I found it on the strut tower on the passenger side (I think thats what it is) cleaned it with electrical cleaner, reset the code and Voila! my POC shut off and refused to crank for 15 minutes. It's kind of frustrating.

Any helpful advice would be great. Please speak in lame man's terms. I'm an aircraft mechanic not a auto mechanic. I don't speaka the leet speak!

I'm also looking to do an engine/tranny swap on it. I feel like maybe it's probably the best thing for me to do since she's got 170k miles on her. What I'm looking for there is what type of engine/tranny would be compatible and would actually fit, while giving me a boost in HP.

Thanks guys.

Much love,

Legacy Lady

oh no she's cranking. She just doesn't like to sit idle. If I'm idle in drive for to long of a period of time, she shutters then cuts off. but she usually fires right up. When I reset the check engine light I had issues with her cutting back on for like 15 minutes, but eventually she fired up. I'm at a loss as to what to do since I'm not mechanically inclined and can't really afford to take her to a mechanic. I feel bad for saying so, but I think I might scrap her and go for another subi. Probably the Impreza, or the Sti if I could get someone to teach me how to drive a stick shift.

GOD I'M SUCH A GIRL!

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check all the hoses. You could very well have torn one and not noticed whenyou did the valve cover gaskets.

The check engine light come on long before I did the valve cover gaskets, and the code is reading the map sensor. Would that cause the idle issue?
